Weekend Getaway Snacks

With summer approaching and the nice weather there are more opportunities to get outside for BBQ’s, picnics, or maybe a weekend away. This does not need to be an excuse to have extra “treats” or eat things we wouldn’t normally have if we were eating at home. We can still keep on track with our healthy choices by keeping a few things in mind!

Planning ahead is ideal. Ensure you have gone grocery shopping and are stalked up on whole fresh foods. Only buy what you can consume and keep in mind the colors of the rainbow so you have a variety of nutrients!

Easy and quick breakfast is a smoothie. You can put his together to take with you or have at home. Use 1 cup of water as a base, add frozen berries, ½ cup of plain yogurt and a scoop of high quality protein powder if you wish.

A great snack to have in the car is raw veggies such as snap peas and carrot sticks. If you are at a picnic enjoy either hummus or tzatziki as a healthy dip and great for kids who like to dip their food!

Focus on vegetables, salad and protein for lunch. The vegetables and salad are full of water and nutrients and will make you feel fuller faster, and the protein will help keep you sustained longer!

Enjoying something sweet is still possible! Try pitted dates and almonds or almond butter as a great snack. Kale chips are also a great healthy snack, which are fun to make using different seasoning and a hit at a picnic or on the go in the car. Great seasonings include light brush of olive oil and sea salt or parmesan cheese.

Lastly eat slowly and stop eating when you feel 80% full. This is a great way to avoid over eating which is easy when there is lots of different food! In order to try everything out take small portions if you are at a potluck!

The summer is a great time to get together with friends and family and enjoy good food, but we can still have tasty snack and meals with out resorting to powdered donuts and candy!
